Objectives: This in vitro study compared the shear strength of two glass ionomer lutting cements in comparison with zinc-oxy-phosphate cement immediately after sealing and after artificial aging.
Materials and method: The cements tested are: Meron® (VOCO), Riva Lutting® (SDI) and Zinc Cement Improved® (SS White Group). Twenty intact molars were collected, cleaned and then coated in self-curing resin. Axial sections were achieved with Buehler Isomet®. Sixty NiCr (casting ceramic alloy) plates were prepared in 1 mm thickness, 8 mm height and 3 mm width. All in all, 20 dental surfaces were sealed with each cement, where 10 samples underwent the shear bond test immediately and the other 10 after artificial aging. Each cement was applied according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Results: The shear strength, in decreasing order, is Riva Lutting® (2.42 MPa), Meron® (0.76 MPa) then Zinc Cement Improved® (0.44 MPa) for the immediate shear bond test and Meron® (2.5 MPa) then Riva Lutting® (2.17 MPa). Zinc Cement Improved® samples were totally dissolvable in artificial saliva. One-way ANOVA revealed significant differences in bond strength and shear strength between the tested cements before artificial aging (p < 0,0005) but a non-significant difference after artificial aging (p = 0.78). All tested materials have different adhesion after aging with a significant difference (p < 0,0005).
Conclusions: The glass ionomer cements showed the best adhesion forces and shear strength with superiority of Riva Lutting®. Further studies are needed to better understand the sealing of these cements.
