Résumé

Objectifs : Les agents de santé primaire ont la capacité éducative et clinique nécessaire pour apprendre l'ensemble des soins bucco-dentaires de base et devenir la principale ressource pour la promotion de la santé bucco-dentaire et les soins simples dans leur communauté. L'étude a été entreprise afin de déterminer la volonté des agents de santé communautaire à traiter des patients se plaignant de douleurs dentaires, de recevoir une formation sur le traitement oral de base et donner leur avis sur un ensemble de soins bucco-dentaires de base dans la promotion de la santé orale.
Méthodes : Les données ont été recueillies au moyen d'un auto-questionnaire. Les questionnaires ont été examinés par des pairs pour la validité du contenu et révisés avant la collecte des données. L'analyse a été effectuée à l'aide du logiciel SPSS-16. Les pourcentages ont été comparés à l'aide du Chi-carré avec un intervalle de confiance de 95%.
Résultats : Tous les participants ont rapporté avoir vu des patients pour des plaintes dentaires. Environ 60% des participants ont vu moins de 5 patients pour douleurs dentaires par semaine, tandis que 27,3% ont vu entre 5-10 patients par semaine. Les deux tiers (66,7%) et 18,2% des patients ont consulté les centres de santé respectivement pour douleur et plaintes multiples. Environ 90% des professionnels de santé étaient disposés à recevoir une formation sur le traitement oral de base et fournir un traitement pour les patients souffrant de douleurs dentaires.
Conclusion : La volonté exprimée par les agents de santé communautaires pour apprendre les rudiments des soins dentaires et fournir un traitement dentaire à la population de leur communauté locale est une indication que ce personnel peut être utilisé pour combler les inégalités existantes en matière de santé bucco-dentaire et contribuer à la promotion de la santé bucco-dentaire.

Abstract
Basic package of oral care: a veritable tool for promotion of primary oral health care by community health officers

Objectives: Primary health care workers have the educational and clinical capacity required to learn basic package of oral care and become the primary resource for oral health promotion and simple curative care in their communities. The study was undertaken to determine the willingness of community health officers to treat patient with oral complaints, receive training on basic oral treatment and comment on basic package of oral care in the promotion of oral health.
Methods: Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires. The questionnaires were peer-reviewed for content validity and revised before data collection. Analysis was done using SPSS-16 statistical software. Proportions were compared using Chi-square test at 95% confidence interval.
Results: All the participants reported seeing patients with oral complaints. About 60% of the participants saw less than 5 patients with oral complaints per week, while 27.3% saw between 5-10 patients per week. Two-third (66.7%) and 18.2% of the patients visited the health centres for pain and multiple complaints respectively. About 90% of the health workers were willing to receive training on basic oral treatment and provide treatment for patients with dental complaints.
Conclusion: The expressed desire by the community health officers to learn basic oral treatment and provide treatment for the dental population in their local community; is an indication that this group of staff may be used to bridge the existing inequalities in oral health and contribute to the promotion of oral health.
