Abstract
Prevalence and pattern of non-nutritive oral habits among orthodontic patients at a tertiary hospital in South-South Nigeria: a ten-year retrospective study

Background: Non-Nutritive Oral Habits (NNOH) can be deleterious to oral tissues. Yet, the prevalence among orthodontics patients in Port Harcourt is unknown. This study was to determine the relative frequencies of non-nutritive oral habits among orthodontic patients at University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
Methodology: A 10-year retrospective analysis of orthodontic patients at UPTH was conducted to determine the relative frequencies of NNOH observed among them. Records of patients seen between 2008 and 2018 were retrieved and screened for information on NNOH. The frequency distribution of different types of NNOH was demonstrated and related to the demographic characteristics of the patients. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 22 with level of significance set at p < 0.05.
Results: A total of 515 patients’ files were retrieved and screened. This included 224 (43.5%) males and 291(56.5%) females. Of these, 195 (37.9%) patients had documentations about NNOH including 120 (41.2%) females and 75 (33.5%) males. Tongue sucking (28; 23.3%), thumb sucking (26; 21.7%), and tongue thrusting (20; 16.7%) were more common among females while lip sucking (18; 24.0%) was more prevalent among the males. Only a small proportion of patients indulged in bruxism, object biting, tongue biting and lip biting.
Conclusion: Thumb sucking was the most frequently indulged NNOH while tongue biting was the least in this study. Relative to gender, tongue sucking, and lip sucking were more prevalent among females and males respectively.
