Aim: To determine the prevalence of gingivitis and the perception of normal and self-gingiva colour of patients attending the out-patient dental clinic of a tertiary health institution in South-South, Nigeria.
Materials and methods: Self-reported questionnaires were used to obtain information on patients’ age, gender, tribe, perception of their gingiva and normal gingiva colour, presence and absence of gingivitis. Data was analysed using Epi info version 2008. Significance was set at p < 0.05.
Results and conclusion: Of the three hundred and twenty-six participants recruited for the study, 187 (57.4%) were females and 139 (42.6%) males. Age ranged between 18 and 68 years with mean age of 32.33 ± 11.6 years. The prevalence of gingivitis among the participants was 90.8%. About two-fifth {125 (38.3%)} of the participants thought that the normal gingiva color is pink, 76 (23.3%) red, 18 (5.5%) brown, 7 (2.1%) white and 100 (30.7%) did not know the physiological color of the gingiva. One hundred and thirty-one (40.2%) thought the color of their gingivae was pink, 91 (27.9%) red, 39 (12%) brown, 5 (1.5%) white and 60 (18.4%) did not know the color of their gingivae. The clinical assessment of the participants’ gingiva color showed that 256 (78.5%) had pink gingivae, 48 (14.7%) brown gingivae and 22 (6.7%) red gingivae. Perception of self-gingiva color of participants based on gender showed a statistical significance (p < 0.001) while that of normal gingiva color and gender had no statistical significance (p = 0.31). Two third of the participants did not know that the normal color of the gingiva is pink and that it can have physiological pigmentation in dark skinned individuals. There is therefore the need to create periodontal awareness when promoting dental health in the community.
