Abstract
Oral state of children aged 6 to 12 years of Mariane School in Butembo (R.D. Congo)

Objective: To determine the prevalence of oral diseases according to the frequency of teeth brushing, sex and age in the first and second school years of primary education in Butembo City
Materials and method: A pilot study was conducted at Mariane Primary School, on a sample of 88 schoolchildren, of both sexes, aged 6 to 12 years. The data collection was done by anamnesis and oral clinical examination. The comparison of the proportions of pathological cases of two modalities of a same study parameter was done using the confidence interval test for two proportions.
Results: The diagnosed pathologies were: tooth decay (6.8%), tartar (37.5%), cheilitis (1.1%), septum syndrome (1.1%), gingivitis (6.8%), malocclusion (4.5%), alveolar protrusion (1.1%), impacted teeth (2.3%) and fracture of the free edge of the incisor (1.1%). The study showed that only 42% of schoolchildren brush their teeth, but only once a day. The link between non-brushing and the occurrence of oral pathologies has only been confirmed for the prevalence of gingivitis and tartar. There was no significant difference in level of hygiene and achievement between the two sexes. The 11 to 12 age group was significantly more affected by impacted teeth and gingivitis than the 6 to 8 age group. For the rest of the diseases, the prevalences were significantly the same for all age brackets.
Conclusion: The pupils examined have a relatively good oral state, but their oral hygiene level remains insufficient.
