Introduction: The objective of this study was to study the factors related to the microbiological quality of the hands of the nursing staff of the University Hospital for Emergency Reception of the National University Hospital Center of Cotonou.
Method: This was a cross-sectional and analytical study conducted in the University Hospital for Emergency Hospitality in Cotonou in 2019. The target was essentially composed of the clinic's nursing staff and the dependent variable was the microbiological quality of the hands. Multivariate analysis identified the associated factors.
Results: Of the 90 nursing staff, the bacteriological contamination of the hands was 86.67%, indicating their low microbiological quality. The germs identified on the hands of the nursing staff were Escherichia coli (83.33%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (51.11%), Enterobacter claecae (46.67%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (35.56%), Acinetobacter spp (26,67%), Staphylococcus aureus and Citrobacter spp (24.44% each), Staphylococcus saprophyticus and Staphylococcus epidermidis (22.22% each). The factors associated with the poor microbiological quality of the hands of the nursing staff were the lack of training on the prevention of Hospital-acquired infections ORaj: 17.99 (95% CI: 1.0-305.3), the non-achievement of hygiene hands ORaj: 64.48 (95% CI: 4.4-942.2), unavailability of hand hygiene devices ORaj: 23.74 (95% CI: 1.7-323.4) and the tenure less than 5 years in the service ORaj: 41.33 (95% CI: 1.9-877.9).
Conclusion: The establishment of an infection risk prevention approach based on hand hygiene and disinfection of mobile phones is a necessity.
