Postprandial glucose
excursions make a significant contribution to the overall daily
hyperglycaemia of type 2 diabetic patients.
The exact
contribution appears to vary according to the degree of glycaemic control.
According to one
recent study, in well-controlled patients (HbA1c <7.3)
postprandial hyperglycaemia contributed 70% of the overall diurnal
hyperglycaemia.1
In poorly
controlled patients (HbA1c >10.2) postprandial hyperglycaemia
contributed 30% of overall hyperglycaemia.1
Therefore:
PPG makes a major
contribution to overall glycaemic control (up to 70%)
The greatest
contribution is in fairly or moderately well-controlled patients
A window of
opportunity exists, to target PPG early in disease progression.
