Abstract
Estimation of the major age of 18 years using the maturity index of the third mandibular molar in a Senegalese population by digital panoramic X-ray

Objectives: The objective of this work was, using panoramic radiography, to study the civil majority based on the maturation index of the third molar in a Senegalese population.
Materials and methods: The study included 173 digital panoramic radiographs of Senegalese subjects aged between 14 and 24 years. The third molar maturity index (I3M) using the Cameriere method was used. The majority of 18 years was reached when the I3M was inferior to 0.08.
Results: A total of 173 patients records was used, of which 50.3% (n = 87) were females. The mean age of the patients was 18.17 ± 3 years. The real age distribution gradually decreases as I3M increased in both males and females. Mean age for men was 18.11 ± 2.8 and for women it was 19.37 ± 2.8 years in the I3M range between 0.04 and 0.08. There was a close association between the age of majority and minor age with a sensitivity of 71.1% for men and 75% for women. 92.3% for men and 84.3% for women. The post-test probability was 95.4% for men and 92.6% for women.
Conclusion: This study evaluated the civil majority as well as the interest of dental panoramic and third molar for the estimation of civil age. However, further studies with more representative samples are needed.
