Comparison of dental caries status by surface and treatment needs of 5-7 year old children in Tanzania, Uganda and Mozambique

Summary

This paper presents the baseline data of a longitudinal study assessing the dental caries status by surface and the treatment needs of 5-7 year old children in Tanzania, Uganda and Mozambique. Approximately one hundred 5-7 year old children were examined from randomly selected schools in each of three locations (urban formal, urban informal and rural) in each country. The mean dmfs score for the entire sample was 5.1 (7.5), with the mean number of decayed surfaces being 3.4 and missing surfaces 1.7. The mean dmfs score was significantly higher (p-value < 0.05) in Uganda, especially in the urban informal location. The teeth most commonly decayed were the lower molars and upper central incisors. Most of the teeth decayed needed to be extracted. The findings in this study correlate with the few other studies assessing dental caries by surface in east and southern African countries.

Summary
Caries prevalence in 2 and 3 year old children of Adelaïde, Australia

Information on caries experience in Australian preschool children is scarcely available. The aim of present study was to determine caries prevalence in two and three year old children in Adelaide, Australia. A weighted random sample of 160 two and three old children was examined by one examiner (AHW) for caries experience. Most children (88.1%) had no clinical caries. Mean dmft (decayed, missing and filled teeth) score was 0.49 (± l.7), with dt component of 0.39 (± 1.41), mt of 0.03 (± 0.39) and ft of 0.06 (± 0.6). The most susceptible tooth in children with clinical caries was maxillary central incisor (63.2%), while the least susceptible was mandibular central incisor (0%). The results have indicated that the percentage of two and three year old children with clinical caries was low in Adelaide Statistical District.

Les taux de succès à long terme des traitements endocanalaires se situent entre 62 et 94% d’après les résultats publiés par différents auteurs. Cependant par Camus, depuis trente ans, il est raisonnable d’affirmer que le succès d’un traitement endodontique peut être espéré dans 90% des cas car c’est une intervention considérée comme parfaitement codifiée tant dans ses indications que dans son protocole.
Cette étude rétrospective porte sur 210 traitements réalisés par les étudiants de 4ème et de 5ème année. Nous avons noté que les pulpectomies ont un meilleur pronostic que les traitements des dents nécrosées : les pulpectomies enregistrent 90% de succès tandis que les traitements sur dents nécrosées réussissent dans 71%.

Long term results of endodontic treatment performed by dental school students in Senegal

The long-term of endodontic treatment performed by under graduated students in Dakar were assessed. The overall success rate was 83.84% Vital teeth showed better results than the non vital teeth (necrosis).
