Abstract
Influence of material and connector size on the stress distribution of a temporary bridge: a finite element analysis

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate, with the Finite Element Analysis (FEA), the influence of the material and the connector size on stresses in a 3-unit temporary fixed partial denture in order to estimate the fracture resistance.
Materials and methods: Nine three-dimensional models were then constructed with three different temporary materials: a self-cured acrylic resin (Unifast III), a self-cured composite resin (Luxacrown) and a CAD/CAM PMMA-based polymers (TelioCAD) and three different cross sectional sizes of the connector: 9, 12 and 16 mm2. An axial force of 500 N was simulated onto the pontic. The distribution of the equivalent Von Mises stresses was computed for each model using the software ANSYS Workbench 19.1 (Ansys Inc., USA). The data were statistically analysed using the program Statistical Package Software For Social Science (SPSS for Windows, version 18.0, Chicago, IL, USA).
Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the maximum equivalent stresses between the three different tested materials (p-value = 0.837). Decreasing the size of the cross-sectional area of the connector leads to an increasing of the maximum equivalent stresses and the difference was statistically significant (-p-value < 0 .001).
Conclusion: The cross-sectional size of the connector has a significant role in the maximum stresses initiated within the temporary bridge. For Luxacrown and TelioCAD, a size of 9 mm2 can be used for the connector.
