Abstract
Adherence of periodontal patients to supportive therapy at the University Clinics of Kinshasa

Objective: The present study aimed to determine the level of compliance of periodontal patients to University Clinics of Kinshasa (UCK) to improve periodontal management of periodontal patients in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Material and methods: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive study carried out at the UCK from 2016 to 2019 among periodontal patients aged at least eighteen years, of which three appointments had been determined for Supportive Periodontal Therapy (SPT), six months after non-surgical periodontal treatment. They were selected by non-probability sampling. A data collection form and a structured questionnaire were used to collect the data.
Results: Of 97 periodontal patients, 80.4% were incomplete adherents versus 19.6%. Fifty-eight-point eight percent of the subjects were female versus 41.2% male. The most representative age group was 18 to 30 years (40.2%), almost all periodontal patients were partial third-party payers (85.6%); the predominant reason for visiting was pain (55.7%); most periodontal patients had received oral hygiene motivation, scaling and root planning (60.8%). The most common reason for non-return given by incomplete adherent periodontal patients was the disappearance of the main complaint.
Conclusion: Incomplete compliance of periodontal patients to SPT at UCK was high. Particular attention in therapeutic follow-up deserves to be put in place.
