Abstract
Isolated mandibular fractures in children: epidemiological, anatomo-clinical and therapeutic aspects at the Yalgado Ouedraogo University Hospital (Burkina Faso)

Introduction: Mandibular fractures in children constitute a specific pathological entity, occurring in a growing mandible and evolving dentition. The objective of this study was to describe the epidemiological, clinical-anatomical, and therapeutic aspects of isolated mandibular fractures in children at the Yalgado Ouedraogo University Hospital.
Materials and methods: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study with retrospective data collection over a 32-month period. All patients aged 0 to 12 years treated for a mandibular fracture were included in our study.
Results: We recorded 41 cases of pediatric mandibular fractures. The mean age was 6.78 years with a standard deviation of 2.32. A male predominance was observed, with 65.85% of cases. Road traffic accidents were the most common etiology, with 43.90%. Fractures were bifocal in 53.65% of cases. Management consisted of orthopedic treatment in 53.65% of cases. The outcome was favorable for all patients after a 6-month follow-up.
Conclusion: Mandibular fractures in children are unique in terms of the risks of temporomandibular ankylosis, occlusal disorders and growth disorders. Their treatment is often conservative.
