Introduction : La diversification des biomatériaux en odontostomatologie soulève des enjeux éthiques spécifiques, notamment dans les contextes africains où les cadres réglementaires restent en développement. Cette étude a pour objectif d’analyser les pratiques éthiques des chirurgiens-dentistes du CHU de Cocody (Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire) en 2025, dans le cadre du choix, de l’usage et de la traçabilité des biomatériaux. Elle identifie les critères décisionnels, les modalités d’information du patient et les besoins exprimés en formation continue.
Méthodologie : Une enquête par questionnaire a été menée du 10 au 20 Juin 2025 auprès de 30 praticiens exerçant au CHU de Cocody (Abidjan), sélectionnés selon des critères d’inclusion/exclusion définis. Les données ont été analysées à l’aide d’Excel (pourcentages calculés sur N = 30).
Résultats : L’enquête a concerné 30 chirurgiens-dentistes du CHU de Cocody. La biocompatibilité a été citée comme critère principal de choix des biomatériaux par 25 praticiens (83,3%), suivie du coût par 6 praticiens (20%) et de la traçabilité par 2 praticiens (6,7%). Les résines composites étaient les matériaux les plus utilisés par 29 praticiens (96,7%). L’information du patient sur le biomatériau restait partielle dans 12 cas (40%), et la traçabilité était jugée insuffisante par 18 répondants (60%).
Discussion : Les résultats révèlent une forte conscience éthique et une prudence face à l’innovation. L’étude souligne l’importance d’un cadre normatif structuré, d’une formation continue ciblée et de la valorisation de l’autonomie du patient pour accompagner les évolutions technologiques en odontologie.

Abstract
Ethics and biomaterials in dentistry. Exploratory survey of practitioners at Cocody University Hospital, Abidjan, Ivory Coast, in 2025

Introduction: The diversification of biomaterials in dentistry raises specific ethical challenges, particularly in African contexts where regulatory frameworks are still developing. This study aims to analyze the ethical practices of dental surgeons at the University Hospital Center (UHC) of Cocody (Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire) in 2025, focusing on the selection, use, and traceability of biomaterials. It identifies decision-making criteria, patient information modalities, and expressed needs in continuing education.
Methodology: A questionnaire-based survey was conducted in June 2025 among 30 practitioners working at the UHC of Cocody (Abidjan), selected according to defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using Excel, with percentages calculated on a total sample of 30 respondents (N = 30).
Results: The survey involved 30 dental surgeons from the UHC of Cocody. Biocompatibility was cited as the main criterion for biomaterial selection by 25 practitioners (83.3%), followed by cost (6 practitioners; 20%) and traceability (2 practitioners; 6.7%). Composite resins were the most commonly used materials (29 practitioners; 96.7%). Patient information regarding biomaterials remained partial in 12 cases (40%), and traceability was considered insufficient by 18 respondents (60%).
Discussion: The results reveal strong ethical awareness and caution toward innovation. The study highlights the importance of a structured normative framework, targeted continuing education, and the enhancement of patient autonomy to support technological developments in dentistry.
